Some regard the SP 4449 as the last of what was the most beautiful
locomotive in the world. Many still consider it as that, and go great
lengths to exhibit it. Here are a few for starters. If you have some photos to share, feel free to send them to us!
Chris Donhost: In
1998 I had the Daylight emblem tattoo done on my back by an artist in
Reno, Nevada. I gave him a copy of a Daylight Sales advertisement to
show him exactly what I wanted.
The artist really got into the project;
he wanted to do the entire locomotive under the emblem. At first that
sounded like a great idea to me, until he actually started doing the
tattoo. Daylight is my first, and last tattoo. When I had the tattoo
done, I had no idea that 8 years later I would be working alongside the
crew of the 4449 .

Keith Wong: My son insisted on being the engineer of the “Daylight.”
We hope to visit
& ride the Daylight one day. My son would like to say,”The
Daylight is my favorite Steam Engine. When I grow up, I want to be an
Engineer of my own Daylight!”
Daylight fans from San Jose, who have
yet to see the actual locomotive, sent in these photos of the young
ones dressed up as SP 4449 and a red Caboose! Commented by the crew as
one of the best locomotive costumes yet!

A lot of Californian Daylight fans firmly believe that the 4449 should
be on display in California, but since it was the City of Portland
who took steps to preserve one (no other!), the 4449 rightfully remains
in Oregon. Meanwhile, some locomotive crew members decided to call
their own, 4449. :)
