On
April 7, 2007, work commenced on the inspection of the right-side
bearing of 4449's #2 driver at the Portland & Western Railroad
locomotive shop in Albany, Oregon. A few years ago when the bearing
started running a little warm, the locomotive was able to continue
operating at track speed while the crew kept a very close eye on it.
Because the locomotive shop in Albany has a drop-table pit large enough
to accommodate 4449's large 80" drivers, this permitted the work to be
done quickly and effeciently in time for the upcoming Puget Sound Steam
Special. Upon today's inspection, the axle showed no signs of wear, and
only the babbitt bearing needed a new babbitt poured.
